The Ricky P. Sweat Equipment Loan and Assistive Technology Program

Technology allows Georgians living with ALS to continue to live a full life by assisting with mobility and communication needs. Often this technology is not covered by Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance. When that’s the case, families can borrow durable medical equipment from ALS United of Georgia.

From wheelchairs and lifts to Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices, the Ricky P. Sweat ALS Equipment Loan & Assistive Technology Program enables families to access the equipment that allows Georgians with ALS to live their lives to the fullest.

Available equipment is housed in several sites across Georgia and is loaned at no charge to people living with ALS. Given the widespread need for this equipment, please note that loans are subject to availability.

Donations

The Ricky P. Sweat ALS Equipment Loan & Assistive Technology Program is made possible in part because of equipment donations received from families who understand the difference these devices make. ALS United of Georgia is grateful for people’s generosity. If you have equipment you are interested in donating, please reach out to the Care Services Team at careservices@alsgeorgia.org or 404.636.9909 so we can determine if we are able to accept it.

Please note, we are unable to accept:

  • Respiratory assist devices, such as cough assists, bi-pap or c-pap machines,
  • Adult diapers
  • 2-wheel walkers
  • Feeding tube supplies.
  • Hospital beds
  • Mattresses
  • Modular ramps
  • Ceiling track systems
  • Power wheelchairs that are more than 5 years old.

*If you plan to claim a deduction, an appraisal of the equipment will be required.  Please consults IRS guidelines (IRS.gov) or an attorney to determine your best course of action.  Any appraisals must be conducted by an accredited medical equipment appraiser (not a Durable Medical Equipment provider).  Costs for appraisals will vary.
